The Acanthus is a pretty flower found in the Mediterranean. With its purplish spiky leaves it dominates Athens and its history all around in such extent that it is claimed to be “the ultimate Greek flower”. During the middle of the 5th century B.C. it made its appearance in architecture when the wise constructors of the Parthenon, Ictinos and Kallicrates, used it as inspiration to crown of the emblematic temple with an Acanthus acroterion. The democracy, the theatre, the philosophy, all born and raised in Athens were held together under the Acanthus crown of the Parthenon!

Even after the fall of the Athenian democracy, the symbol still kept its momentum. Eventually, during the middle ages, it was turned into the capital of the Corinthian column, whose use was abundant at the time.
